all symbols files are stored in a library file called _symbols.aat. the symbols are stored in a single ttf file .ttf. the ttf file is created in a single folder, along with the library file _symbols. if the symbols folder is not..

symbol mt normal.ttf

to create a new symbol, click the add symbol icon in the symbology group of the symbology window, or use the ribbon icon 'symbol'. from there, choose 2d from the symbol type drop-down menu. type a name for the symbol. if the symbol will be used in a vector document, you can type a label name as well. if the symbol will be used in a raster document, you can leave the label field blank. the symbol can be saved as a personal symbol. if the symbol will be used in multiple documents, you can save it to the styles gallery so that it can be easily found.

the symbol type drop-down menu will show the available fonts. if you don't see a font that looks right, select it, and click the edit button. the font that you are editing can be found in the adobe typography services.

each font can have additional fonts embedded within the symbol. a font can be a.ttf file or a.otf file. the best approach is to use the.ttf file with an embedded font. if you are opening a.ttf file, you can either drag it into the arcmap window or use the open button. this will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select the font to use. if you are opening an.otf file, you can either drag it into the arcmap window or use the open button.
